Injury and illness are never a planned part of our day. Your Natural Health store isn't always open or around the corner when you need something. Summer vacation comes with its bumps, bruises, bug bites and stings. Having the proper natural first aid handy can alleviate a lot of anguish.
Keep your first aid kit in a compartmental container like a tackle box. This keeps things organized and easy to find when you need them in a hurry. Along with the obvious bandages of various sizes and single dose saline eye drops (for that sand that likes to get in your eyes on a windy day at the beach), I have a list of natural homeopathics and herbal remedies, essential oils(EO) and salves that I keep in my family first aid kit.
Allergy
Spring, Summer and Fall allergies can be slightly bothersome to debilitating. Get allergies under control with the following remedies.
AL-J is a mucus thinning formula used for colds and allergies both upper and lower respiratory. Stinging Nettles can help with the allergic reactions of runny nose and tearing eyes and is the main ingredient of the formula Histablock. Sinus Support works as an herbal decongestant, expectorant and soothes nasal congestion and inflammation. A B-Complex with additional Pantothenic Acid assists the body during stressful times. Chinese Liver Balance cools down a "hot" liver and can calm down allergies
Anti-Bacterial
Bleeding
Capsicum (cayenne)-sprinkle on a wound that won't stop bleeding.
Bruises Apply Arnica cream but not to broken skin. Can additionally give homeopathic** Arnica orally under the tongue-2-3 pellets and allow to dissolve under the tongue.
Burns
Lavender EO can be put directly on a small burn or can make into a hydrosol* for larger burns like sunburn. Lavender is one of the few E.O.'s you can use "neat", however, dilute & use sparingly with small children.
Diarrhea
Slippery Elm and Activated Charcoal-take 2 of each, each time person has nausea, diarrheal or vomits. Very important to stay hydrated. If showing signs of dehydration, give Combination Potassium or Solstic Revive(electrolyte powder mix) to assist in keeping electrolytes balanced. If dehydration persists, get emergency care. Expect stools to be blackish following the use of activated charcoal.
Inflammation
For reducing heat and infammation in the body, try Chinese IF-C. Relief Formula works well for general aches and pains associated with physical activities and exercise. Another herbal remedy that works well for inflammation and pain is Triple Relief.
Drainage-Tone and/or Inflamma-Tone by Energetix-These two homeopathic** combinations have saved the day for me many times. Examples of use: eustachian tube congestion and/or ear pain/ache, swollen lymph nodes, sinus congestion with a cold but especially helpful with sinus allergies. Take orally and can also apply topically. Homeopathics** are very safe yet powerful. Antibiotics and all mints** will antidote homeopathics.
Fever
Put 3 Tbsp. Ginger in bath water along with 1 cup Epsom Salts. Lay in water making sure to cover back of neck, arm pits and groin area. Soak for at least 10 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes, then rinse off. Adjust for children: child-1 Tbsp in bath water, infant-2 tsp in basin or sink. Catnip for a fever that will not break. Distress Remedy to alleviate the distress that comes with not feeling well.
Hiccups
Peppermint oil on tongue or in a small glass of water
Hysteria
Distress Remedy
Insect bites/stings
If a stinger remains, remove stinger by scratching across area gently with finger nail in opposite direction of entry. Immediately give Homeopathic Apis Mel-2 pellets under tongue or dissolved in 1/2 tsp. water. This usually is sufficient, however, if further distress, apply Activated Charcoal as a poultice and change every hour.
Insect Repellent
Homeopathic Apis Mel-2 pellets under tongue or dissolved in 1/2 tsp. water approximately 15 minutes before going outside. This will usually work for 1 1/2-3 hours depending on the person. As an insect spray repellent, any combination of the following essential oils made into a hydrosol* or lotion: Lavender, peppermint, citronella, lemongrass, thyme, cedarwood, eucalyptus, geranium. Depending on where you are and what the insect situation is, I would do both!
I have never used the following but have been told this works: For Black Widow, Scorpion or Rattle Snake bites-take 1-2 capsules of Black Cohosh and 1000-2000 mg Vitamin C every 2 hours and do an Activated Charcoal poultice that is changed every 30 minutes.
Nausea
Mild: Peppermint or Tei Fu oil on tongue or in water. Moderate to severe: Slippery Elm and Activated Charcoal- See directions above for Slippery Elm and Activated Charcoal use (under diarrhea).
Nerve Injury
Use homeopathic Hypericum. Nerve injury pain is a throbbing pain. Examples of use: blunt force injury like hitting your finger with a hammer, head injury, neuritis, puncture wounds, trauma, burns
Poison Ivy
Immediately give NSP's BP-X-2 caps and the homeopathic** Rhus Tox-2 pellets under tongue and allow to dissolve. Repeat BP-X every 4 hours and Rhus Tox as needed.
Slivers
Black Ointment. Black Ointment is a "drawing" ointment. Use Black Ointment to "draw out" an infection also. When nothing else is available, can pick a common plantain leaf, mash it, place on sliver, cover and leave for 24 hours. Make certain the Plantain has not been sprayed!
Sunburn
Aloe Vera lotion or gel. Lavender EO-can be used as a hydrosol*, added to an unscented lotion or Aloe Vera gel and applied to sunburn.
Tummy Aches
Vomiting
Wounds
General Rules For a child: Half the adult dose, for an infant, halve it again. With NSP Products: 1 capsule/ 25 pounds
*Hydrosol To 2 oz. pure water add 10-12 drops of your choice of essential oils. Shake well before each use to distribute oils in the solution.
**Homeopathics Antibiotics and all mints will antidote homeopathics-breath mints, mint gum, mint toothpaste, mint essential oils. If you are taking a homeopathic, do not use mint 30 minutes before or after.
